Solid waste treatment in Vietnam

The figure below illustrates the data provided by the World Bank in Đánh giá công tác quản lý chất thải rắn sinh hoạt và chất thải công nghiệp nguy hại (2018) and the VHLSS dataset (2018) of the General Statistics Office.

The data shows that the household waste collection fee in Hanoi is only one third of the estimated and reported waste treatment costs. About 76% of the budget for domestic waste treatment come from the city budget. With the most common method for waste treatment in Vietnam is landfilling, the number of landfills is higher than in more developed regions. However, most landfills are unsanitary.

According to the new Law on Environmental Protection just passed by the National Assembly, household waste fees will be calculated by volume instead of the current equal fee collection per household. The law takes effect from January 1, 2022, and the waste fee regulation must be implemented no later than December 31, 2024.
